March 5, 2012 - TEENAGE MOUNTAIN CLIMBER OF THE WORLD’S SEVEN HIGHEST SUMMITS BRINGS TALES OF TEAMWORK AND ADVENTURETO CULVER ACADEMIES

CULVER – Like many other mountain climbers, Jordan Romero has scaled the highest summits on all seven continents in the world. But unlike all of them, Jordan began his quest to achieve that dream (and set the first of many world records) at the age of 10, and completed it by age 15 (yet another world record).

Jordan and his parents, also known as Team Jordan, brings the story of his experiences, as well as his message about the power of goal-setting and teamwork to students at Culver Academies on Monday, March 12, 2012, as part of the school’s Vaughn Family Outdoor Leadership Series. Jordan will address the student body at 2:30 p.m. in Eppley Auditorium.

Funded by the generosity of the Robert C. Vaughn family (Robert Class of 1974, his wife, Fallon, and their children Robert Jr., Class of ’06, and Browning, Class of ’08), the Vaughn Family Outdoor Leadership Series was established to introduce Culver students to adventurers and explorers who share their outdoor experiences, challenges, and passions.

Jordan summited the first of the Seven Summits, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, at the age of 10 in 2006. Less than a year later, in April 2007, he scored his second summit on Mount Kosciuszko in Australia. Two more summits followed that year. He continued on his quest (including a world-record climb up Mount Everest) until topping the last mountain, Mount Vinson Massif in Antarctica, on Christmas Eve 2011.

And while there will be plenty of stories about what were likely harrowing moments in his exploits, a greater message of setting goals, as well as being a young person working with adults as a team to achieve those goals, is the valuable lesson for students to take away from his presentation.

About Culver Academies

Located on Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver, Ind., Culver Academies is a boarding school offering a college-preparatory curriculum for boys and girls in grades nine through 12.Annually, Culver has an enrollment of 800 students representing more than 40 states and 25 countries. Approximately 21 percent of the students are international, coming from such countries as Canada, China, Ecuador, Germany, Korea, Lithuania, Mexico, and Taiwan.

Culver’s mission is to educate its students for leadership and responsible citizenship by developing and nurturing the whole individual – mind, spirit and body – through integrated programs that emphasize the cultivation of character.

Founded in 1894, the boys’ school, Culver Military Academy, is based upon a military-type system used to teach self-discipline, responsibility, and leadership. Culver Girls Academy, founded in 1971, is based upon the prefect system, with girls practicing democratic, self-rule to achieve similar values.

The Academies and the six-week Culver Summer Schools & Camps, with an enrollment of 1,400 for boys and girls ages 9-17, operate on the same 1,800-acre campus in Marshall County in north-central Indiana.
